The Brew Guide: Master Cold Brew
BY SHOETOWN COFFEE PUBLISHED SAT 18 JAN 25
Master Cold Brew with our easy-to-follow brew guide. Cold brew is becoming more and more popular all year round with a heap of recipies to mix things up. It’s super easy to brew and you can make a big batch to see you throughfor a few days. We’ll be using the Hario Mizudashi Cold Brew Coffee Maker for this but you can also use a French Press if you don’t have one, it’ll do the same job. This brewer requires little precision but produces a smooth well balanced cup that highlights the best parts of a complex speciality coffee. By relying on time over temperature you get a much more concentrated and rewarding taste as long as you’re patient enough to wait.
Cold Brew Recipe.
- 50g Coffee
- 600ml Water
- 12-24 Hours Brew Time
Time to gear up. You'll need.
- Hario Mizudashi Cold Brew Coffee Maker
- 50g Ground Coffee
- 600ml Water
- Spoon
- Scales
Dialling It In.
You’re looking for something coarse here, but don’t worry too much, if its not quite dialled in perfectly, you’ll still come out with something pretty decent. If you’re using a wilfa grinder aim for around the the ‘Steep’ section on the dial, this is a good starting point, adjust to taste.
We always recommend using wholebean and grinding fresh. This way you’ll get the most out of your coffee, and you can play around with the grind size to suit you. It will also help keep your coffee fresher for longer.
Ok. Got What You Need? Let's Get Started.
- Throw in 50g of ground coffee into the mesh filter in the top of the jug and zero the scales.
- Pour in 600ml of cold water. This can take a while to filter through, once the scales hit 600g give the grounds a quick stir to make sure they are completley saturated. Pop the lid on and stick it in the fridge to steep for at least 12 hours.
- Once the coffee’s steeped for at least 12 hours remove the mesh filter and discard the used coffee grounds. Now you can either keep the cold brew in the jug as it is or grab a V60 and filter the coffee to remove any fine bits.
- You’re done. Drink up.
You’ll have roughly 500ml of cold brew to play with, dilute to taste with water and serve over some ice. Throw in some milk or mix things up to create some awesome cold brew cocktails and flavoured drinks.
