The Brew Guide: Master The AeroPress

BY SHOETOWN COFFEE PUBLISHED SAT 18 JAN 25

Master the Aeropress with our easy-to-follow brew guide. The Aeropress allows for minimal precision while producing a cracking cup, with more body than a pour-over. This method is the original and easiest to get to grips with. Our brew guides are a great starting point for more consistently great cups of coffee, but make sure you play around with the recipes until you hit the perfect cup for you.

15g Coffee
2 Mins Brew Time
Easy

AeroPress Recipe.

  • 15g Coffee
  • 225ml Water
  • 2:00 Brew Time

Time to gear up. You'll need.

  • AeroPress
  • Aeropress Filter
  • 15g Ground Coffee
  • Kettle
  • 225ml Water (Plus additional to rinse)
  • Spoon
  • Scales
  • Timer
  • Mug

Dialling It In.

You’re looking for something relatively fine, somewhere around table salt, but don’t worry too much, the Aeropress is pretty forgiving and will give you something pretty decent even if it's not quite dialled in perfectly. If you’re using a Wilfa grinder, aim for around the second ‘R’ of the Aeropress on the dial, this is a good starting point.

We always recommend using wholebean and grinding fresh. This way you’ll get the most out of your coffee, and you can play around with the grind size to suit you. It will also help keep your coffee fresher for longer.

Ok. Got What You Need? Let's Get Started.

  1. Grab your filter paper, place it in the cap, and give it a quick rinse with hot water, this takes away any paper taste you might get. Screw this onto the Aeropress and stick it on top of your mug, place this onto your scales.
  2. Throw in 15g of your ground coffee straight into the Aeropress and zero off your scales.
  3. Now pour in 225ml of water, just off the boil. Start the timer as soon as you start to pour. We’re looking to get this in within about 15 seconds, give or take. Give it a good stir making sure all the grounds are wet.
  4. Stick the plunger in just enough to create a vacuum, we don’t want to press down just yet. Once the timer hits 1:15, give it a quick swirl and take it off your scales.
  5. Press down on the plunger using your body weight until you hear a hissing sound, this should be slow and steady otherwise you’ll be in a bit of a mess. This is your cue to stop pressing, and you should be looking at about 2:00 on the timer. You're done.

Remember this is just a starting point, if your brew was slow and your coffee tastes bitter, coarsen up your grind. If your brew was fast and it tastes weak and sour, make your grind finer. If you’re looking for more body, up your coffee dose and change up your grind.
